Facts About The Vegetable Orchestra- “Onionoise”

The group of musicians was founded in 1998. It’s based in Vienna but continues to amuse people all around the world. There are many different styles of music here, mixed all together to create a unique melody. There was never a founder or a leader. This is a group of organised men and women with a musical background which came together, created and developed the amazing idea of vegetable instruments. This assemble currently contains 11 musicians, 1 video person and 1 sound technician. The vegetable orchestra performs 20-30 concerts a year.

The Instruments

All the instruments are made exclusively from fresh vegetables such as carrot, leek, artichoke, pumpkin and crackling onion skin. These make organic instruments which are going to be eaten and only used once. In addition to the vegetables, various instruments like record players or power drills are created in order to generate unique noises and unusual textures to music itself. The sounds produced by the instruments are amazingly multi- layered: they have transparent crackling, massive deep noises, dark and hypnotic styles and many more. Sometimes there are unfamiliar sounds which we cannot understand the origin of, and that truly is the beauty of the music. The first CD of the Viennese vegetable orchestra was recorded in 1999.
